Abstract
Objective: This thesis investigates the contributions of the Global Fund in controlling malaria in Vietnam since 2014, focusing on its multifaceted approaches, strategies, and interventions in malaria prevention, detection, and treatment, as well as overall health system strengthening.
Subject and Methods: The research employs a case study design combined with a desk review of project documents, financial reports, impact assessments, and academic literature. Qualitative methodologies, including key informant interviews and thematic analysis, are used to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the Global Fund's interventions.
Key Findings: The study finds that the Global Fund's contributions have significantly enhanced malaria control in Vietnam through increased funding, technical support, and infrastructural improvements. Notable successes include improved diagnostic capabilities, the introduction of rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs), and increased community awareness and engagement. However, challenges such as logistical issues, funding constraints, and the emergence of drug-resistant malaria strains were identified. The research highlights the critical role of international collaboration, government commitment, and community involvement in sustaining malaria control efforts and provides insights into effective public health interventions.
Objective: Many COVID-19 patients in ICU suffered from acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), which requires urgent respiratory and hemodynamic support. There are several nutrition-specific issues in ICU COVID-19 patients that need to be taken into consideration, such as malnutrition and the refeeding syndrome. Refeeding syndrome must be prevented when we feed patients to avoid overfeeding and its complications. In this study, we aimed to assess the risk of refeeding syndrome and related factors in COVID-19 patients in ICU at COVID-19 Patients Treatment Hospital (COVID-19 hospital) in 2021-2022.
Subject: 359 COVID-19 patients in ICU at COVID-19 hospital
Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted among COVID-19 patients admitted to the COVID-19 hospital from September 2021 to December 2022. The nutritional status of patients was assessed by GLIM 2019 criteria. The risk of refeeding syndrome was evaluated by ASPEN 2020 criteria.
Results: The risk of refeeding syndrome in COVID-19 patients in ICU was 54.04%, of which moderate risk was 37.33%, compared with 16.7% for severe risk. The associated factors to the risk of refeeding syndrome included overweight, using non-invasive positive-pressure ventilation, invasive mechanical ventilation, feeding through enteral nutrition and feeding through total parenteral nutrition.
Conclusion: The refeeding syndrome is a severe complication of nutritional intervention; therefore, early diagnosis and preventive treatment of refeeding syndrome will help prevent feeding complications in ICU patients
Study “Knowledge, practice for malaria control and some related factors among forest goers in four provinces, Vietnam 2023” was conducted from January 2023 to December 2023 with two following objectives: (1) Describe the current status of knowledge and practices on malaria prevention in four high-risk provinces: Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Dak Nong, and Binh Phuoc in 2023; (2) Analyze some factors related to knowledge and practices on malaria prevention in four high-risk provinces: Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Dak Nong, and Binh Phuoc in 2023;
A cross-sectional study used a validated questionnaire to survey 696 foresters in 12 communes in 4 provinces including Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Dak Nong, and Binh Phuoc. Data collectors were commune health station staff, a multi-stage sampling at the province - district - commune level, selecting households with forest goers to interview directly and fill in the information in Kobo Toolbox software. Throughout the survey, the researcher directly and indirectly supervised the process.
Data were managed and analyzed with Stata 16.0 software. Quantitative variables were described using mean values (standard deviations), while qualitative variables were described using frequency and percentages (%). Logistic regression analysis was used to find factors related to research participants' knowledge, and practice (p < 0.05).
Research findings show that 78.6% of forest goers had good knowledge about malaria prevention. When interviewing people with malaria, 54.6% had good practice of malaria treatment, and 33.3% reported following treatment instructions exactly. Multivariate analysis revealed a relationship between malaria prevention knowledge and factors such as age group, education level, income, receiving malaria prevention information, and the study subjects' occupation. Good malaria prevention practice is associated with factors such as gender, ethnicity, religion, education, health insurance, occupation, monthly work frequency, and correct malaria prevention knowledge.
The study recommends that commune health stations create communication programs with relevant content and use effective media. People should actively learn and improve their knowledge of malaria, bring necessary items such as mosquito nets/hammocks, protective gear, mosquito repellent cream... when going to the forest or staying overnight in the forest/farm, wear long clothes, limit bathing, and get water from forest streams at night when staying overnight in the forest. When you notice symptoms of illness or are traveling from high-risk malaria areas, go to a medical facility right away to be examined and treated.

Objective: Meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in fibromyalgia on the domains of pain, depression, anxiety and quality of life. Method: Publications were searched with the keywords “repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation” and “fibromyalgia” for randomized controlled trials that compare rTMS with sham stimulation for treating pain, depression, anxiety, and quality of life. Trials available until April 2021 were searched through PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Controlled Trials Register. The postintervention scores after 4 weeks for pain, depression, anxiety, and quality of life were extracted to compare the effects of rTMS and sham. Subgroup analysis was conducted based on the stimulation site. Results: From 265 screened articles, 11 eligible randomized controlled trials involving 303 patients were included. The results show that rTMS is more effective than sham stimulation in improving pain (standardized mean difference [SMD] = −0.35; 95% confidence interval [CI] = −0.62 to −0.08; p = .01) and quality of life (SMD = −0.51; 95% CI = −0.78 to −0.23; p = .0003). It is not more effective than sham stimulation for depression, and anxiety. Background: Vietnam’s 2045 development plan requires thorough reforms in science and technology, which underlines the role of research-oriented universities in generating and transforming knowledge. Understanding the current research performance and productivity in Vietnam is important for exploiting future agendas. Objective: This study aims to explore the growth patterns and collaborations in the scientific publications of Vietnam. Methods: Data on documents in the Web of Science Core Collection database were searched and extracted to examine the research performance in Vietnam. Publication growth patterns in both quantity and quality were examined. The evolution of research disciplines and collaboration networks were also analyzed. Trends in the growth in the number of publications, citations, and average citations per publication between 1966 and 2020 were presented. Temporal tendencies of the 10 most productive research areas in each period were illustrated. VOSviewer software was used to analyze the discipline network, country network, and institution networks. The trends and the geographical distribution of the number of publications and citations were analyzed. Results: A total of 62,752 documents in 8354 different sources from 1966 to 2020 were retrieved. A substantial growth was observed in the Vietnamese scientific output during this period, which was mainly research with international collaboration. Natural sciences such as mathematics, materials science, and physics were the top 3 most productive research fields during 1966-2020 in Vietnam, followed by experimental research fields such as multidisciplinary sciences, plant sciences, public, environmental, and occupational health. In 1966-2020, there was the emergence of multidisciplinary research–oriented universities in both public and private sectors along with a significant increase in the number of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary publications. Although the scientific quality has improved, these publications are still of mostly medium quality as they are concentrated in middle-ranking journals.Conclusions: Our study highlights the notable growth in research performance in terms of both quality and quantity in Vietnam
from 1966 to 2020. Building multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research agenda, developing networks of local and international
researchers for addressing specific local issues, improving the participation of private sectors, and developing science and
technology mechanisms are critical for boosting the research productivity in Vietnam.

Background: Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) and Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) disproportionately affect men who have sex with men (MSM). Data on the prevalence, anatomical distribution, and correlates of NG and CT infections among MSM in Vietnam are limited. Methods: Between July 2017 and April 2019, MSM 16 years or older without HIV were enrolled into an observational cohort study. Baseline data, including sociodemographics, sexual behavior, and HIV status, were collected. Testing for NG and CTwere performed on urine, rectal, and pharyngeal specimens. Multivariate logistic regression models identified factors associated with NG and CT infections at baseline. Results: In total, 1489 participants underwent NG/CT testing. The median age was 22 years (interquartile range, 20–26 years). There were 424 (28.5%) NG or CT infections: 322 (21.6%) with CT and 173 (11.6%) with NG. Rectal infections were most common for CT (73.9%), whereas pharyngeal infections were most common for NG (70.5%). Independent risk factors for CT or NG infection included ≥2 sex partners in the prior month (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 2.04; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.44–2.91), condomless anal sex (aOR, 1.44; 95% CI, 1.12–1.86), and meeting sex partners online (aOR, 1.35; 95% CI, 1.03–1.76). Recent genitourinary or rectal symptoms were not associated with infections. Conclusions: The overall and extragenital prevalences of NG and CT infections were high within this sample of young MSM without HIV in Hanoi. Testing limited to urethral specimens would have missed nearly three-quarters of CT and NG infections, supporting the need for routine testing at multiple anatomic sites

Objectives. To determine how harm reduction should be applied in low-resource countries such as Vietnam by exploring the perspectives of people who use drugs (PWUD), health care professionals, and policymakers regarding methadone treatment and harm reduction strategies. Methods. We conducted 2 qualitative studies in Vietnam between 2016 and 2021. We interviewed 62 PWUD and 22 experts in drug policy development and drug treatment programs, conducted observations at methadone clinics and harm reduction program meetings, and analyzed drug policy documents. Results. PWUD considered methadone treatment only as a transition to a drug-free life. Policymakers deemed harm reduction ineffective and continued to enforce arrest and incarceration of PWUD. Drug intervention programs are not yet geared to providing specialized services. Effective communication strategies and information on evidence-based harm reduction models are inadequate to help policymakers make the right decisions. Conclusions. Harm reduction principles have not been fully adopted in Vietnam. A harm reduction strategy based on a more humanistic approach that goes beyond a biomedicalized approach is urgently needed in Vietnam and other countries in the Global South.

Background: The prevalence of common mental disorders (CMDs) among people living with HIV and people who inject drugs
is high worldwide and in Vietnam. However, few evidence-informed CMD programs for people living with HIV who inject drugs
have been adapted for use in Vietnam. We adapted the Friendship Bench (FB), a problem-solving therapy (PST)–based program
that was successfully implemented among patients with CMDs in primary health settings in Zimbabwe and Malawi for use among
people living with HIV on methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) with CMDs in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Objective: This study aimed to describe the adaptation process with a detailed presentation of 4 phases from the third (adaptation)
to the sixth (integration) of the Assessment-Decision-Adaptation-Production-Topical Experts-Integration-Training-Testing
(ADAPT-ITT) framework.
Methods: The adaptation phase followed a qualitative study design to explore symptoms of CMDs, facilitators, and barriers to
conducting FB for people living with HIV on MMT in Vietnam, and patient, provider, and caretaker concerns about FB. In the
production phase, we revised the original program manual and developed illustrated PST cases. In the topical expert and integration
phases, 2 investigators (BNG and BWP) and 3 subject matter experts (RV, DC, and GML) reviewed the manual, with reviewer
comments incorporated in the final, revised manual to be used in the training. The draft program will be used in the training and
testing phases.
Results: The study was methodologically aligned with the ADAPT-ITT goals as we chose a proven, effective program for
adaptation. Insights from the adaptation phase addressed the who, where, when, and how of FB program implementation in the

MMT clinics. The ADAPT-ITT framework guided the appropriate adaptation of the program manual while maintaining the core
components of the PST of the original program throughout counseling techniques in all program sessions. The deliverable of this
study was an adapted FB manual to be used for training and piloting to make a final program manual.
Conclusions: This study successfully illustrated the process of operationalizing the ADAPT-ITT framework to adapt a mental
health program in Vietnam. This study selected and culturally adapted an evidence-informed PST program to improve CMDs
among people living with HIV on MMT in Vietnam. This adapted program has the potential to effectively address CMDs among
people living with HIV on MMT in Vietnam

The aim of this study is to compare the nutritional status of older adult inpatients consuming Texture-Modified Diets (TMD) to older adult inpatients consuming a regular diet. Methods : The study was designed as cross-sectional and was conducted in three large hospitals in northern Vietnam. The data for 344 older adult inpatients were collected in 2021 by dietitians. Results : The result showed 104 subjects were prescribed TMD. The textures of hospital diets have still not been adequately developed. In particular, the hospitals had not yet developed pureed meals. All older adult inpatients (74.7 ± 6.8 years old, 52.9% female) had 28.8% malnutrition by the GLIM criteria. The TMD group had a malnutrition prevalence two times higher than the regular diet group. Total energy intake from hospital meal and outside snacks in the regular diet group was higher than in the TMD group, about 150 kcal. Although energy provided from the hospital diet in both groups was similar, hospital meal wastage in the TMD group was higher than in the regular diet group. Conclusion : The older adult inpatients on TMD may have a nutritional status worse than those consuming a regular diet. Hospital diets need to be improved in texture and quality. J. Med.
