Background: Survivors from traumatic brain injury suffer from functional and cognitive deficits. Activities of Daily Living is crucial in measuring the treatment and health-related quality of life among these patients. Patients with traumatic brain injury suffer from activities and dysfunction. Previous studies revealed that direct assessment of activities of daily living is the most accurate predictor of a person's need for assistance or ability to manage their life independently in the community. Traumatic brain injury is among the leading causes of death in Vietnam, mostly caused by traffic accidents. However, very few studies included the assessment of activities of daily living as an instrumental measure among this population in Vietnam. Thus, this study will provide the audience with a general evaluation of traumatic brain injury patients using this measure and associated factors during the recovery of traumatic brain injury patients Objectives: This study aims to evaluate activities of daily living among the traumatic brain injury population in Thai Binh province and determine the correlated factors to this indice. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 212 patients with traumatic brain injury from February to September 2020 in Vietnam. Katz ADL scale was applied. Depression, quality of sleep, and social support scales were used. Multivariate Tobit regression was adopted to identify factors associated with activities of daily living. Results: 75.9% patients with traumatic brain injury recovered their activities of daily living function completely. Continence was the activities of daily living task that patients controlled well, while transferring was the lowest proportion on activities of daily living independence. Patients who received first aid had higher ADL scores than those who had not, by a statistical difference with a p-value = 0.04. The mean ADL score was 5.4 (SD = 1.4. Depression and ISS score (p < 0.01) strongly affected ADL index. Conclusion: The study's findings offered evidence for authorities to change the healthcare policies for TBI patients. Proper prehospital care, a basic low-cost hospital care model, and mental health counseling services should be addressed to improve the health-related quality of life among the patients.
